Margaret Covington

As a native of Williamston, NC, Margaret moved to the area in 1974 to teach elementary school in the Halifax County Public Schools. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education at East Carolina University and followed her passion for learning about reading difficulties at the University of Virginia. After receiving her Master of Education degree, with a specialty in reading from UVA, she worked as a supervising teacher at the McGuffey Reading Clinic during the summer. Her primary jobs were helping students/teachers design learning games, develop vocabulary skills via Latin and Greek root words, and create activities to entice reluctant readers. During her 40-year career, she continued to develop learning games and learning centers as a reading specialist, classroom teacher and teacher of the gifted and talented students in Halifax County. “When a child’s eyes lit up with excitement, I knew learning was happening. It was especially meaningful when students could generate products of their own as a result of my efforts to make up a game or an activity to get the juices flowing.”  The internal drive to create and explore other interests continues to be a significant part of her life. She continues to enjoy drawing, painting, playing the flute, reading and exercising. Seeking opportunities in the community and surrounding area to share her interests is important to her “mental health”. Margaret is a member of the Heart of Virginia Concert Band, Lake Country Artisans Guild, and a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church where she is a member of the choir and plays the flute on special occasions.  Margaret is a licensed ZUMBA teacher and teaches ZUMBA classes and yoga at the South Boston/Halifax County YMCA. She is married to Bill Covington, a native of Halifax, and they enjoy spending time with their children and grandchildren whenever possible.
